The key

“A stranger handed me a key and simply said, ‘You’ll know when to use it.’”

But first… what is this key?
Am I the first to hold it?
Who was that man, and why did he feel so familiar? I didn’t know him, yet I felt as though I knew everything about him.

He looked worried when he gave me the key—yet strangely reassuring.
Like a mother telling her child that everything will be fine, while deep down she knows they’re about to face a long, painful journey.

Why me?
Why give me the key?
And more importantly… what does it open?

— It’s just a key! shouted Christopher.
You’re not going to do anything with it. There are millions of locks in the world—what, are you going to spend your life trying every single one? You don’t even know that guy. Are you really willing to waste your life for a stranger you met once?

Maybe he was right.
But a small voice in my head wouldn’t let it go.
That key wouldn’t leave me alone.

It was a simple object: round head, rusty body, long worn shaft. Some kind of letter was etched on it—maybe an “E”. But the rust had eaten away most of the detail.

Life went on.

Until one day, walking downtown as usual… I saw it.

That key.
My key.

A chill ran through me.
A woman was holding it.

Had she stolen it? Had I lost it?

I rushed toward her.
Her hair was wild, makeup clumsy—like she hadn’t had time to get ready that morning.
And yet, that moment felt like an eternity.

— Hey Victor, are you even listening? asked Christopher.
What do you think of my idea?

— Uh, yeah, sounds great. Go for it, I believe in you, I replied absentmindedly.

But I hadn’t heard a word.
Only one thought pulsed in my head: the key.
I had to find it.

It had to be somewhere.
I hadn’t lost it.
I remembered placing it in the Chest.
The one where I store all the things I might need…
One day.
